September 2023

It’s been almost a year since I updated my site… What a full and beautiful year. I’ll borrow a quote I love to try and explain my lack of posts: “As it is in poetry, silence is a part of the form. The blank time between entries speaks of great activity, or deserts of experiences, or absence for other reasons. The silence in diaries can speak as eloquently as words.”  In this case, its the silence in pictures and it was great activity…

Here are some highlights of shoots I’ve done in the last year.

Glengarry, Kamberg Valley

A Kamberg Gem

We discovered Glengarry Holiday Farm in 2015 thanks to friends who’d been going there since they were children in the 80s. “Best family holidays, best memories,” they’d say. I recall one of them adding, “It’s old but it’s gold”. True story.

The place is the crown jewel of the Kamberg. No matter what season you holiday there, you can’t go wrong. This is all the stuff that unforgettable family holidays are made of. In summer it's greener than green and you’ll enjoy hours tubing down the river or splashing about in the pool, surrounded by mountains and such scenic gardens. Think afternoon forest walks, making boerie rolls or roasting marshmallows on the braai – all while everyone’s exhaling and taking in the view from their rustic chalet as the sun sets (epically) on the Giant’s Castle mountain range. Then autumn is a treat: fishing by the dam, taking in the changing landscape as shades of green fold into orange and yellow. A very relaxed game of golf or bowls, mountain biking on their beautiful trails or enjoying a sundowner in the pub while the kids romp about the place like it’s still the 80s and no one’s worried about where anyone else is or what they are getting up to. Then there’s the colder months. We’ve had many beautiful, chilly getaways at Glengarry. Snuggled up in winter woollies, roast in the oven and story time by the fire, or games of Bananagrams and Monopoly. Then it's spring and everything is blossoming. Literally. It’s an explosion of life and colour that is so good for the soul. You’ll sleep comfortably and peacefully at night, nothing but cool, mountain breezes blowing through your windows. The gardens have been tended to with absolute excellence and enduring love and patience thanks to original owner (and resident) Rose Sivright - affectionately referred to as “Annie Rose” by her grandchildren (also living there). Rose’s son, Gareth and his lovely wife Kelly Sivright now run the place.

Passed down from one generation to another, you’ll feel the love at every turn. Whether it's Grandpa Rev’s delicious rolls in your belly (named after Rose’s hubby - the wonderful Revall Sivright who passed away a few years ago), or the freshly cut wildflowers on your chalet table, to the hearty frozen meals in the reception freezer, or the thoughtfully marked out trails for the least to the greatest mountain biker in the family. The Sivright’s dogs are two chubby old labs that come running to “Sammy” and “Dugger” or better still to a piece of steak off the braai. Then there is “Bruce” the trusty, old Australian Shepherd Dog, and the latest addition – a delightful, black Labrador puppy “George”. They are all there for every guest to enjoy as if they were your own.

A few holidays in and our kids had the place mapped. They knew where to get an ice-cream, how to feed the animals in the animal farm (and what time to get on the tractor to do so), which boulders to avoid in the river when tubing, and my personal favourite: how to actually relax, get filthy and play (for hours) with no TV or WIFI required.

If you haven’t stayed at Glengarry, book in soon as they get packed in advance with guests in chalets or in their campsites. Visit their teagarden for delicious scones with jam and cream, or yummy burgers and milkshakes. Day visitors are welcome.

Glengarry is a family affair in every sense of the word. They’ve thought about your family in detail and made sure it’s a no fuss getaway from start to finish. You will have exactly what you need there (simple stuff that is) to do exactly what families can do best in such a space: connect, relax, play, rest, repeat.

Food in 2021

Photographing food is a favourite for me. Here’s a snapshot of some of the food I’ve photographed in 2021…

Featured here: Nice, Sandton and Parkhurst; Milk Bar, Sandton; Lineage Nottingham Road; Village Cafe, Nottingham Road; Mini Me Patisserie, Balgowan; Miche Bakehouse, Nottingham Road

Miche Bake House, Nottingham Road

There’s a delightful new bakery in Nottingham Road – Miche Bakehouse. Stop there as soon as you can if you haven’t already. You won’t be disappointed. Grab a Country Loaf, a frozen (sliced) Sourdough Sandwich loaf, a block of homemade butter, a jar of the best sweet and sour pickles around, a jar of their moreish onion jam, and enough Choc Chip Cookies and White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Cookies to full up the jar at home! Best of all – everything in the bakery is sourdough based and gentle on the gut.

You’ll find Miche Bakehouse between the Pilates studio ‘Pause’ and Pam Golding Estate Agency – in The Meander Square (opposite Gowrie Village). Their name is inspired by the French word “Miche”- given to a very large, rustic sourdough bread made from a natural leavening (ask them all about this when you visit) and usually weighing between 1,5 - 5kgs! Typically, it would also have a high percentage of wholewheat flour, making it more nutritious.

For partners and bakers Dave Goncalves (39) and Lyndsay Zinn (35) – this is a better way. “The bread lasted long because of the baking process, and it was good for everyone’s health” says Lyndsay. Dave says that their traditional style loaves also have a high percentage of wholewheat too.

With this in mind, and the dream of creating a family business, Dave and Lyndsay traded in their corporates outfits for chef jackets and moved from Johannesburg to The Midlands during lockdown. Back in the big smoke, when the couple weren’t baking together, Dave worked as a web developer and Lyndsay as a graphic designer. They were also so inspired by their almost three years of travelling around the world – mostly through Europe and Asia. “We travelled for coffee and blogged about cafes along the way,” says Lyndsay. You can still find their inspiring and visually beautiful feed on Instagram under @grindstonerunaways.

Dave says he’s always loved bread, but it was only on their world trip that he discovered bread like no other in Germany and in The Netherlands. “I could eat it without suffering heartburn afterwards and it was all about the sourdough.”

When the couple came home to South Africa, Dave started researching and learning about sourdough. “I was also so happy to do less web development and spend more time working with my hands. I realized there was so much good food to be made without preservatives or chemicals.” He set out to work with his lovely partner Lyndsay to create recipes that are now cooking in their ovens daily in Nottingham Road.

“Instant yeast is just a thing because people are all in a hurry but that is compromising our heath. We are excited to give locals access to a bakery like this – a bakery with good sour dough and a selection of goods that are good for your gut and health.”

And here’s where Ophelia comes in. Who is Ophelia? It’s the name they’ve affectionately given their sourdough starter. Seems apt to name the very thing poured into all your products – and even better, she’s named after the couples favorite Lumineers song, ‘Ophelia’… She’s nurtured, fed and checked on regularly. Dave’s even been known to pop past the bakery at night to feed Ophelia.

“We are excited to build this into a business we could give our children one day. We are also excited about the artisanal, hand-mademovement and want to be part of the change which we see with other young artisans moving into this area.” - Written by Antoinette McDonald for Nottingham Road Tourism.

Tiny Baby Sessions

Tiny baby sessions work best when the little one is under a month old. That said - this little guy is almost three months old here and he handled like a champ. The biggest reason you want to photograph newborns when they are super new is because its easier to get the shots - they just sleep and lie about. When they are a little older - they become very aware and easily unsettled. About style - I am not into props and accessories - I love a candid, documentary style baby shoot. I’ve learnt a few tricks over the years. A warm room goes a long way; and extra time is a must because these little ones can’t be rushed and mom needs to know she can feed and burp and change and do whatever else baby needs. I love the shots we did of the nursery for baby Conrad - photographed here. His mum has an eye for design and decor and it was important to capture the love she’d poured out in preparing for him.

Joburg2c

“joberg2c is a 900km, 9 day, 110% mountain bike adventure across four provinces of South Africa. It is 99.5% off-road, passing through 220 private farms with more than 280km of single track trails.

Starting 85km south of Johannesburg and finishing at Umdoni Park Golf Club, Pennington on the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, it is a tough rewarding journey that uplifts the soul. For some it is a race for most it is ride.”

This year I had the privilege of shooting the mini leg of this race (due to Covid) as riders stopped at magnificent Glengarry Family Farm in the Kamberg Valley.

To the beautiful Mama's I have shot...

My mother was
my first country,
The first place I
ever lived.
—Nayyirah Waheed, “lands” from ‘Salt’

Happy Mother's Day. You all have different stories and different strengths - unique traits and ways of being that make you beautiful. I've watched you through my lens and many of you in my life - you inspire me with your unstoppable love. To those who've lost moms or children - my heart aches with you on today and everyday. There is nothing like a mothers love. To the single moms out there - you are incredible. To those who long to be moms - I hope with you today. To those who love others like a mother, thank you. You are the teachers, the aunties, the grannies, the friends. The world is a better place with mama's in it. And last but by no means least - to the greatest mom, Bernadette Arde: I love you deeply.

Fourdoun Hotel & Spa, Nottingham Road

The magnificent Fordoun Hotel and Spa recently completed their Superior Room upgrade. The very talented Georgie Ridl (nee Bates) managed this decor project and it was a treat to work with her and marketing manager Molly Staas. The Superior Suites encapsulate the grandeur of a bygone era and individually styled. They are spacious and overlook lush pastures and panoramic views of the Drakensberg and offer spectacular sunsets.

Gowrie Farm, Nottingham Road

I’ve spent this past week shooting in homes at Gowrie Farm and Village in Nottingham Road. This was one of my favourites! Oh and see if you can spot me…hiding in a cabinet? ;)

Family Photography

Having a family shoot is so worth it. Memories captured and framed or sent to grandparents and loved ones faraway, are what it’s all about. Hanging up that shoot on your wall in your home is a beautiful thing too. It’s documenting a season as a family and that is precious - especially when you realise how fast those seasons come and go.

We recently moved provinces (from Gauteng to KZN) and in the pack-up my husband was commenting on how well documented our children’s lives are. I have a big box of pics from my childhood which I love looking through and my children enjoy digging into too. But sadly my husband has only a handful of photographs (the rest were stolen years back) and that’s so sad. Photos have a way of placing us - of giving us a sense of self - like this is me and this is us - I belong in the world and I belong with these people

Below are some of my recent family shoots. I am always so grateful when a family chooses to spend an hour or so with me - granting me and my camera access to their world. Family is a sacred space. One full of magic and mess. Speaking of mess…If you have little ones, expect a fair amount of chaos on shoot day - wardrobe tantrums, displays of chronic exasperation and exhaustion after about three photos etc. It’s totally normal and I am totally at home with this kind of scenario. We’ll make it work and we’ll have fun, I promise!

2020 Shoots

Despite the curveball of a year this one was, I am so grateful to have maintained a steady stream of beautiful work. Thank you to all the lovely faces and people behind the plates of food and gorgeous interiors that I shot.

Here’s a look at two great shoots from this year…

Meet the dynamic team from ZDFIN in their beautiful offices in Johannesburg.

TUSCANI HAIR SALON opened shop in Edenvale this year and this a taste of what you can expect when you visit their beautiful hair studio.

In My Studio - Lockdown 2020

My most patient subjects…

Thistlewood Product & Lifestyle Shoot

Thistlewood is a family owned business nestled in the misty hills of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. They have been manufacturing quality preserves, marmalades, condiments and dressings since 1990. It was a pleasure to shoot their products in and out of studio. Pictured here: Shoot in Parkhurst at Nice for Thistlewood.

Moments to Remember

The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. If you don't celebrate those, they can pass you by. Alek Wek

Alter Collection

Last year my husband and I joined forces with our good friend and talented designer Jannine Williams in a leather business called Alter Collection. This shoot was a dream. Our original concept of a very minimalist shoot evolved into a rather dramatic one - extravagant and gorgeous - complimented with flowers and the most beautiful fabric (thanks to the team from Hertex).

To launch our partnership, we present to you our passion - ‘The Maker Range’. This is an invitation to you to join in our process and own your leather products in a whole new way. You join the Alter family in the journey by putting your hands and your heart to good use and make something with us that will be yours forever. We’ve designed this range of wallets, clutches, laptop sleeves, journals, artist pallet sleeves, and multi-purpose décor and storage boxes. We’ve cut the leather for you and provided you with the tools and the instructions to stitch your product and put it together. You can view the full range and order here www.altercollection.co.za

Recently we’ve also partnered with anti-human trafficking group Hope Risen and there is a sewn up version of The Maker Range available - sewn up by survivors who have been rescued and rehabilitated by this incredible organisation. Part of the proceeds from these sales go to Hope Risen.

Thank you to the ultimate makeup pro of make up pros Amy Sprawson, and to our ridiculously good looking friends AJ and Kris Holmes of Page & Holmes Photography for agreeing to be in-front of the camera on this one! Enjoy!

Let them eat cake! Nice, Parkhurst

I’m going to let these ones speak for themselves. Go and eat cake at Nice. Make sure you eat brekkie there first. Then have lunch. And stay for tea and cake. I love this place and the beautiful creative women that run the joint. Thanks ladies - let’s do this again soon! You can see more of my images on Nice’s social media accounts.

Tuscani Hair

The dynamic team at Tuscani recently opened for business in Rosebank. Dramatic and stylish decor makes a grand statement from the moment you enter. Over the years Tuscani Hair has grown into a name synonymous with hair salons and styles. Their mission is to continue to grow in experience, reputation and quality of service, to become a leading hair salon. Pop in and visit them - you won’t be disappointed.
