At the end of 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, you’ll find a spot that’s become an institution in the Jozi foodie space: Nice on 4th.
If you need convincing, it’s been named among The Best Brunch Spots in Jozi 2026… Their signature breakfast baskets (those toasted, hollowed-out loaves filled with drippy eggs, bacon and tomato relish toppings, and other good things) have earned a loyal following and well-deserved reputation, and on weekends you’ll often queue on the pavement waiting for a table (dont, worry, they’ll bring you a cappuccino while you wait).
I’ve been photographing alongside the lovely team behind Nice since 2018 when they took over from the original owner, and this runs deeper than just a client relationship for me. Our kids have grown up around those tables… once upon a time, tiny little people happily modelling in exchange for biscuits and cake. These days? Tweens and teens with opinions… and invoices ;) Fair enough.
The menu is generous and full of favourites, but the cakes are the real stars for me. It’s my go-to for coffee and something sweet (their carrot cake is delish). They’ve held onto the original charm of the space while continuing to evolve — great food, warm atmosphere, and consistently excellent service (their staff are the sweetest).
This recent half-day shoot (April 2026) was all about capturing that — drinks, breakfasts, and their irresistible sweet treats. Honest, inviting, and true to what you’ll actually experience when you sit down (or order that very generous chicken pie to take home… feeds about ten, easily). And the roulade? Dangerous territory. I went to town on the roulade shot, pulling flowers out of a number of vases. I love that shot! Rumour has it they are now serving it full of flowers (I love that).
Thank you, as always, for trusting me with your menu, Nice. It’s a joy.
If your café or restaurant needs imagery that reflects the heart of what you serve, I’d love to work together. Based in Johannesburg, always happy to travel.
